Art in the Open Family Day

Artist and designer Greg Moore, whose exhibition Heirloom will be on view at the PAA from May 22 through August 17, 2014, is inspired to create his elegant ceramic tableware by local agriculture and garden crops. In particular, Moore is interested in the earth, from which we harvest not only the plants we eat, but also clay, a material historically used to make the plates, bowls, cups, and other objects used in preparing, serving, and eating food.

At AiO’s Family Day, the PAA invites participants to join in Moore’s exploration of the relationship between art, nature, and food. Taking inspiration from the natural landscape of the Schuylkill River as well as garden crops, create your own tile for use in the kitchen or the garden. We will use fruits, vegetables, acorns, leaves, shells, and other natural objects to print designs onto tiles. Participants are also welcomed to bring t-shirts, canvas tote bags, or other items on which to print designs.

Art in the Open (AiO) is a citywide event that celebrates artists, their inspirations for creating art, and their relationships with the urban environment. Each Spring, a jury selected group of artists is chosen for this three-day event located along the Schuylkill Banks, creating new works of art outside, in a creative process that is open to everyone. The public is encouraged to participate in Art in the Open by visiting often during the three-day event, to see the works of art evolve and talk with the artists about their creative process.
